The Big Monty
Colin Montgomerie, "Monty," coached his European team to a one point win over the US in the 2010 Ryder Cup. The US had a huge comeback on Monday, but in the end the Americans were one tie or win away from taking the title.
Monty had a lot to prove going into this tournament. He had performed well as a Ryder Cup competitor, but had little or no experience as a coach and never quite figured out how to win on the individual international stage. And one must also not forget his presence in the tabloids with a high profile divorce, scandalous courtship with a wealthy widow, and recent infidelity. Moreover, anyone with the name "Monty" is bound to face some scrutiny. Yet, Monty proved us all wrong by serving as a genuine motivator for his team leading them to the title.
Maybe Tiger has something to look forward to --- despite his tabloid nightmare he can one day make coaching a winning Ryder Cup team the greatest moment of his career.
