Blame it on the Meat

Tour de France winner Alberto Contador of Spain gestures during an official welcoming ceremony in his hometown of Pinto, outside Madrid, in this July 26, 2010 file photo. Contador returned an adverse analytical finding for clenbuterol following an analysis of a urine sample taken during an in-competition test on the second rest day of the Tour de France, the International Cycling Union said on September 30, 2010. Alberto Contador, the next Lance Armstrong and 2010 Tour de France champion, has just tested positive for a banned substance. The two positive samples were taken from the cyclist in July during the Tour de France. Contador claims that he is innocent, because the substance came from some meat that he ate during the race. The authorities are still investigating the incident, but Contador is subject to a two year suspension and having his Tour de France title stripped.

There have been endless excuses provided by athletes over the years for testing positive for banned substances, but never before have I heard the meat excuse. Nonetheless, experts agree that the small amount of the substance in his urine would not have provided any advantage. Plus, since it is taking a long time for Contador to be sanctioned, it is likely that the agency is buying the meat excuse.

  1. Does he shop at Publix or Harris Teeter? Cause I've really been trying to get in shape lately and could use some of this mystery meat.
